San Jose State University Ministry
Going to Silicon Valley’s Public University
Jesus calls us to go. In one of the nation's most unchurched cities, we are determined to bring San Jose the good news together. Our vision is clear: we want to see our city experience the love of Jesus and follow Him faithfully. We have adopted San Jose State University (SJSU) as the focal point of our local ministry efforts, committing ourselves to bringing Biblical hope and truth to its campus. Many students are open to engaging in conversations about life's most important questions. Just like our city, the student body reflects a rich diversity of religions, cultures, and ethnicities, representing people groups from all over the world. We love the students at SJSU and consider it an amazing privilege to do ministry there.
Worldview Conversations & Bible Studies for Skeptics
Our goal is to give SJSU students the opportunity to hear and engage with the message of Scripture in two unique ways. First, we host worldview conversations on campus through our YouTube show, Theology in Public. We bring a sign to a public space with a thought-provoking question and invite students to join a friendly, on-camera discussion. We then explore how our answers to life's biggest questions come back to our beliefs about God and we reason about those beliefs together. Second, for students who enjoy these discussions and want to read the Bible for themselves, we offer 1:1 or group Bible studies using our study guide, The Jesus Story. In these studies, we walk through passages from the Gospel of Luke, allowing students to experience the Scriptures firsthand and understand its message at a deeper level.
Engaging the World & Equipping the Church
Our SJSU ministry serves two purposes: engaging those outside the church with impactful discussions and Bible studies, while offering members of the church valuable opportunities for discipleship. Jesus discipled the twelve through their experiences and active participation in His ministry. In a similar fashion, we invite our members to experience and actively participate in our ministry on campus. This involvement edifies, encourages, and equips us to continue similar ministry work in our own lives, especially when combined with the preparation offered through our practical ministry training.
